Unlocking Africa’s Healthcare Potential: The Power of PVAC and Strategic Collaboration – Insights from Dr. Abdu Mukhtar

Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), representing the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, positioned the Impact Africa Summit as “One of the most consequential for pharmaceutical sector development across the continent.” This statement underscores the summit’s crucial role in driving transformative changes within the healthcare ecosystem.

He articulated the Nigerian government’s commitment, through PVAC, to implementing an ambitious health sector renewal agenda, anchored on four key pillars, aimed at revolutionizing the healthcare system.

    • Effective Governance:

Dr. Mukhtar emphasized the importance of “aligning multiple stakeholders —the federal government, states, the private sector, the public sector, partners, the donor community, and pharmaceutical companies — making sure that we have one conversation, one plan, and one budget so that everything is transparent and there is accountability in the way we deliver to the citizens of this country.” This unified approach is essential for achieving the overarching goal of saving lives, reducing pain, and ensuring quality healthcare for all Nigerians.

    • Improvement in Population Outcomes:

The government’s focus extends beyond governance to tangible improvements in population health, with a commitment to implementing evidence-based interventions that address the most pressing health challenges.

    •  Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chains:

This pillar encompasses several key areas:

    • Promoting Clinical Research and Development: Recognizing the critical role of clinical research in driving innovation and improving patient outcomes.
    • Stimulating Local Production of Health Products: Prioritizing the reduction of reliance on imports and fostering a thriving local pharmaceutical industry.
    • Strengthening Supply Chains: Ensuring efficient and reliable supply chains for essential health products to enable effective healthcare delivery.

      Health Security:

Dr. Mukhtar stated that the government is committed to building a resilient healthcare system capable of effectively responding to public health emergencies. He highlighted that “over the past one year, the Nigerian government, through PVAC has been working to implement the ambitious agenda of the health sector renewal investment initiative,” emphasizing the government’s active pursuit of these goals.

The Impact Africa Summit 2025 will be a place to see more of the progress of PVAC, as actions and deliberations continue to highlight the importance of strategic collaboration to achieve and sustain the momentum towards inclusive, affordable, and accessible healthcare across the African continent.
