Global Health Medical Affairs Director – Sickle Cell Flagship Program

Dr. Kwaku Marfo is a global health citizen currently residing in New York, United States with roots from Ghana, West Africa. Dr. Marfo joined Novartis in 2013 aspiring to focus on equitable access to innovative therapies for underserved populations. Dr. Marfo’s appointment in 2020 to join the Global Health & Sustainability team to lead the global medical affairs strategy for the Sickle Cell Disease Flagship program was purpose-driven and timely to support access to hydroxyurea, crizanlizumab and other innovative therapies for sickle cell disease patients especially for patients in sub-Sahara Africa. Prior to joining the Global Health Medical Affairs Team, Dr. Marfo was Worldwide Medical Affairs Director, Cosentyx leading medical affairs strategy for dermatologic conditions for international markets.

His other roles at Novartis includes: Medical Affairs Director, External Medical Strategy and Regional Scientific Manager with the Immunology and Dermatology Unit in United States. Dr. Marfo obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD.) from University at Buffalo, New York with Solid Organ Transplant Residency Training at Montefiore Medical Center – University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. Dr. Marfo stayed at Montefiore Medical Center as Director of Transplant Clinical Trials and Clinical Pharmacy Manager following completion of his residency training.

In 2013, he received an NIH Comparative Effectiveness Grant to pursue a Master of Public Health Degree (MPH) with a focus on Global Health and Community Based Research completing a practicum project with New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Marfo has also received a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) from Baruch – Zicklin School of Business and a Multicultural Leadership Certification from UCLA Anderson School of Management. Dr. Marfo has presented and published over fifty (50) abstracts and manuscripts at major international congresses and peer reviewed journals in the fields of hematology, pharmacy, transplantation, nephrology, hepatology, dermatology, oncology, immunology, rheumatology, and global health.
