
Professor Biobele Brown
Professor of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, Ibadan
Prof. Brown is a Professor of Pediatrics at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and an Honorary Consultant Pediatrician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He has a background training of a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery after which I specialized in Pediatrics and have subsequently practiced and undertaken research in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. He is the head of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. I also have postgraduate training in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics that has advanced my research capabilities. He is the chairman of the Research Working Group of the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARGO) that involves experts with interest in research and management of SCD in Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Prof Brown is a member of the Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria (SCSSN), the umbrella body that brings together all stakeholders in the treatment and research of people living with SCD in Nigeria. Based on my interest in Hematology, Having carried out several studies on sickle cell disease, his recently completed study was on diagnosis and genotyping of sickle cell disease phenotypes and its genetic modifiers in Ibadan, Nigeria.
In collaboration with Professor lkeOluwa Lagunju, the head of the Pediatric Neurology unit we have carried out studies on Transcranial doppler ultrasonography in assessing risk for stroke in SCD with several publications. His previous studies have focused on diagnosis of sickle cell disease, infections and stroke in the following publications. He has also successfully carried out projects as an investigator or Principal investigator including monitoring, and participated in multicenter collaborative studies within Nigeria, between African countries, with workers in the United Kingdom United States.
