Dr. Francisca Obiageri Nwaokorie, Ph.D, M.Sc., MBA, FIMLSCN, FAMLSN

Dr. Nwaokorie is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. She is a Medical Microbiologist with speciality in Anaerobic bacteriology, Human microbiome, and Microbial genetics. Over the years, she has carried out research in oral microbiology focusing on genetics and antimicrobial profile of Fusobacterium nucleatum, Clostridium Species and other anaerobes of public health importance.
Her current research is on oral and gut microbiome where anaerobes play major roles in human health, immune system modulation and diseases. She is currently the CMUL Laboratory Site-Lead for the Biorepository team in a multi-site clinical trial project titled “The Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), a Co-investigator and Lead – Microbiome Team, in NIHR Transforming Parkinson’s Care in Africa (TraPCAf) Project and Laboratory Lead-CMUL-Lagos site in a Global Health-supported Observational Study of Long Term Neurological Sequelae of COVID-19 in Lagos.
Her latest collaborative-research supported by NIH is on the Intersection of Periodontitis with HIV-ANTIRETROVIRAL Therapy-induced Immune Reconstitution Bone Loss, on Alveolar Bone and Tooth Loss, in people living with HIV where she is using her expertise in oral microbiology and human microbiome to provide laboratory investigative support. Francisca is a Nigerian member of the WHO-AFRO SLIPTA/SLMTA Program for Strengthening Laboratory Quality Management Towards Accreditation.
She is a multiple-chapter co-author in the first ever edition of the e-book titled ‘Multidisciplinary Applications and Advances in Biotechnology: Contributions from the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria Working Groups, She has over 80 publications to her credit. She will be speaking on the topic ‘Embracing Personalized Medicine: Empowering Clinical Scientists for Evolving Patient-Centered Trials” on 20th of November 2024 in the Laboratory Workshop.
