    Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf

    Honourable Commissioner For Health,
    Kano State.

    Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf is an indigene of Kano state, born in Gwale local government on the 1st January, 1966. He attended Kofar Na’isa primary school from 1973 to 1979, and then proceeded to Government Secondary School Gwammaja II from 1980 to 1981. He then proceeded to Rumfa College to complete his secondary school education from 1982 to 1984. He attended College of Science and Remedial Studies, CAS, from 1986 to 1988. Upon completion, he got admitted into the faculty of medicine in Bayero University, Kano, in 1988 where he completed his preclinical studies in 1990. As at then, the clinical phase of the programme had to be completed in other universities’ teaching hospitals, he therefore joined the faculty of medical sciences, university of Jos from 1990 to 1995.

    Dr. Labaran did his housemanship training in Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, from May 1995 to April 1996 and national service as a youth corp doctor in Federal Medical Centre Enugu, Federal Radio Corporation Enugu and Department of SS Enugu from July 1996 to June 1997. He came back home as a medical officer in the department of accident and emergency of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and in the department of surgery in the same health facility from July 1997 to August 1998.

    Dr. Labaran has experience of being a medical doctor and personal physician to the then state Governor, the Grand Leader of Kwankwasiyya Movement, Sen. Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, from 1998 to May 2003 and also a team leader, Hajj medical team in 2000 Hajj exercise. He did his residency at the department of internal medicine, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital from August 2003 to May 2011 and graduated from National Postgraduate Medical College of Africa as Fellow Physician Endocrinology. Upon the return of Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso as the duly elected governor for the second term in 2011, Dr. Labaran was appointed commissioner of health up to 2015.

    Considering his accomplishments in the health sector when he was commissioner, His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf appointed him same commissionership position to continue serving the state. He is happily married with children.
