Professor Abidemi J. Akindele (FNYA, FAMedS, FAAS) is the current Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics & Toxicology, University of Lagos, Nigeria. He previously served as Deputy Director in the Research Management Office (RMO) of the University (2020-2022). His research interests are Natural Products Pharmacology/Toxicology and Drug Repurposing.
He holds B.Sc. (First Class Honours) and Ph.D. Pharmacology degrees from the University of Lagos and Diploma in Research Ethics from the Center for Bioethics and Research, Ibadan, Nigeria. He has published over 100 scholarly articles in reputable national and international peer-reviewed Journals.
Prof. Akindele has been a recipient of the Fulbright Junior Staff Development Award (Visiting Researcher at University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, United States), CV Raman International Postdoctoral Fellowship (Indian Institute for Integrative Medicine, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Jammu, India), CNPq-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Universidade de Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto, Brazil), Fellowship of the Africa Science Leadership Program (ASLP), U.S. Department of State Grant for capacity building workshop for young (early-career) women scientists in Nigeria, InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Science Advice for Policy Fellowship at the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) (Kenya), University Administration Support Program (UASP) Fellowship in Research Management funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, administered by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) (Visiting Scholar at Iowa State University, Ames, United States), etc.
Prof. Akindele served as President of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA) (2013-2015) and member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) Exco. (2015-2016). He was a Core Team member of the Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) Africa Project funded by the BMBF, Germany (main research report available at https://doi.org/10.26164/GYA_00435). He is a Faculty in the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), University of Lagos, Nigeria (a World Bank initiative).
Prof. Akindele has keen interest in issues relating to Research Integrity, Research Ethics and Responsible Conduct of Research (RI, RE & RCR), and Research Development and Career Support. He is the current Chairman of the Biorisk Management (BRM) Committee of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
