Augustine Onyeaghala (PhD, FWAPCMLS, FMLSCN) is a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Quality Assurance Consultant (GCP, GMP and ISO), Clinical Research Scientist and Professor. He had his basic degree in Medical laboratory science, MSc in Chemical Pathology and PhD in Clinical & Translational Research from the University of Central Nicaragua, South America. His doctoral research focused on identifying, isolating and developing novel drug molecules from herbal product for the treatment of cervical cancer. The output from his doctoral research was an award winning conference paper in 2015. Aside his academic pursuit and attainment, he has received various certifications from different professional bodies both from within and outside the country.
Few of which are : Certification in Implementation Research (WHO/TDR), 2019; Certificate in Basic Principal Investigator, GCP , GLP ,and NHREC 2018; Certification in Laboratory Audit / Inspection , MLSCN 2017; Certification in Quality Management System (GCP, GMP), Kriger, Canada,2016; and Certification in Global Health Universite De Geneve 2015; among others . Prof. Onyeaghala has over 23+ years experience covering quality assurance, laboratory systems strengthening, clinical and translational research, implementation science, public health and academia.
He has played various roles as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, Technical Advisor and Consultant to facilitate and implement the following national projects – Identification of Potentially Effective Local Therapies for COVID -19 (TETFUND; 2021-2022), Development, Evaluation and Adaptation of Test Algorithm from RDT, ELISA Based Kits as an Alternative to Diagnosis of COVID -19 using Nucleic Acid Testing Method among Nigerians (NCDC, 2021); Developing Revised Policy Documents on National Rapid Test Kit (RTK) Harmonization into National HIV/AIDS Testing Algorithm (FMoH, 2021); Evaluation of National Integrated Specimen Referral Network (NISRN,FMoH/GF, 2020); The Nigeria AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS, 2018) amongst others .
Prof. Onyeaghala has been involved in clinical research activities in Nigeria 2012. Working with other Faculty members of the Global Health Trial Network (GHTN), he was involved in facilitating the first ever GHTN training workshop on clinical trial in Nigeria. Since then, he has been committed to GHTN Global and Nigeria Faculty activities, facilitating several workshops and delivering diverse papers on topics centred on clinical research including quality assurance in clinical research. . He has featured on GHTN Oxford University program titled: Meet the Experts where he answered questions raised by clinical research professionals from across the globe. He has great experience in the auditing clinical research sites in line with GCP requirements.
He has received different scientific and travelling scholarship award including : Ohio State University, United States, Post Research Ethical Analysis (PREA) Scholarship, (March, 2019); Joint Wellcome Trust, National Institute of Health (NIH) , UK Medical Research Council and Bill &Mellinda Gates Clinical Research Travel Scholarship, Bangkok, Thailand, (November, 2017); Johnson & Johnson Management Development Institute (MDI) GIMPA, Accra, Ghana, (October 2017); Johnson & Johnson Management Development Institute (MDI) Conference Scholarship GIMPA, Accra, Ghana, (October 2016); University of California Los Angeles (UCLA/Johnson& Johnson Management Development Institute (MDI) Scholarship, (November, 2015); International Biopharmaceutical Association (IBPA) Scholarship for a Post Graduate Diploma Training in Clinical Research, (September, 2008 ) and Pfizer Clinical Research Conference Travel award (October,2008) Just to mention a few .
Prof.Onyeaghala is a prolific scientific and academic writer and presenter. He has attended and presented at many conferences; and authored a very good number of scientific and industry papers in both local and international journals. Some of his papers have appeared in Biomed Central (BMC Globalization and Health) , Clinical Chemistry and Lab Medicine, Cancer Biomarkers, Journal of Complimentary and Integrative Medicine, European Journal of Medicinal Plants, Journal of Food Science in Africa, African Journal of Health Sciences , Journal of Public Health in Africa, WHO bulletin amonst others . A recent data from Clarivate analytics showed that some of his papers published in 2021 and 2020 ranked top 1% and 10% of most cited articles in clinical medicine category respectively.
He has also written seasoned publications for GHTN some of which are: understanding quality management systems in clinical research and basic statistics for clinical research professionals. He has also documented technical health policy documents for FMoH and other international partners and one professional book in quality management system. He is a member of many professional bodies some of which are: Alumnus, Management Development Institute (MDI) University of California, Los Angels; Fellow, Global Health Trial Network, Oxford University, UK; Member, Society of Quality Assurance (SQA) United States ; Member, West Africa Regional Faculty, Global Health Clinical Trial Network, Oxford University, UK; Member Society of Quality Assurance (SQA), United States of America; Fellow, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria; Member, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria. He performs peer review for different organizations and Journals.
Some of which are: Society of Quality Assurance, Journal of Public Health in Africa, African Journal of Laboratory Medicine , European Journal of Medicinal Plants, Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research just to mention a few. He has passion for mentoring, teaching, researching and writing. He is married and blessed with four excellent and great children whose names he coded VIPG.
